Mephiston Resurrected

I'm sure many old Mephiston models were getting repainted in the last few weeks, and my own model was no different. I had painted him early on in my hobby career, so I now knew many techniques that I could have used to paint him better.

First, I applied sepia washes to all the gold to bring out the color and definition. Then I went to work on his cloak, highlighting up in colors that were more appropriate. When I had painted him last, I had painted his cloak Scab Red, and I thought that simply adding white to your color was how you achieved highlights. Now I know that there has to be some yellow added, otherwise it doesn't accurately simulate highlights correctly. So this time around I repainted it mechrite red, and then highlighted with first a 50/50 mix of blood red and mechrite, then a full blood red. An ogryn flesh wash tied the colors together at the end and brought out the definition in the cloak.

I wanted his inner robes to be a lighter red, so I started with blood red and used blazing orange to achieve the highlights I desired. An Ogryn flesh again tied the colors together and brought out the definition.

I also applied a wash of thrakka green to the plasma coils to bring out definition, as well as repainted all the jewels to make them brighter.

A little photoshop-fu and he was resurrected, ready to do battle!

On my table: 4/06/10

I finally got my new Blood Angels codex! My Sons of Baal will finally see some action! But first, I ordered a new Sanguinary Guard kit to go with them. This is a treasure trove for converters and kitbashers, as a single kit provided a complete Sanguinary Guard squad and enough left over bits to bash together a Honor Guard / Veteran Squad with the simple addition of an assault squad box.

I had a single Apothecary model lying around, so I used leftover bits to convert him into the Sanguinary Novitiate for the Honor Guard. The Sanguinary Guard box had 2 extra sets of 5 heads, and an extra 5 shoulder pads, not to mention numerous other bits that are to find their way into my kitbashes.

I imagine that the Death Guard kit is the same. I intend to pick up one of those when I have the dough.

Sons of Baal: Death Company Test Scheme

I've never gotten around to painting my Death Company marines, despite having them for about a year. I finally got around to painting up a test, as well as trying out a new technique: painting the eyes as gems.

Some things are the same, such as the grungy look as if they have been wading through soot, and the over-abundance of gold. I did not want the typical all-black death company, as that seems a bit much to me. I can understand painting the shoulder pieces, and putting an X over them, but to totally repaint the armor just before a battle seemed a bit weird.

Well... whaddya think? How does this scheme fit in with the rest of my Successor chapter?

Until next time,

Like Christmas in March!

The postman made me a happy fellow today! (Ew, not like that, you pervert.) I got my humongous order of space marine goodies today, and I am already happily at work assembling some of the vehicles. I have to take a break every once in a while, or the glue fumes go to my head. It is during such a break that I am currently posting!

Brimfrost, the biggest annual tournament, is nearly here. I debated going for a while, but I finally decided to suck it up and go. It's going to start at 7:30 in the morning, meaning I have to leave my home at 5:30, but it might be worth it, so I am frantically trying to hammer out a list and paint up the models that require it. I have until the 19th to have everything finished (as I see it).

So far, it looks like I have the following to finish painting before the 20th:
2 Land Raiders
1 Rhino
10 Assault Terminators

That isn't so bad when you put it down on paper! I can get that done. Await updates, and you will be rewarded!

Well, time for me to get back to building the 1st Land Raider.
Until Next Time,

Mustering the Angels: Preparing for Blood Angels update

With the arrival of some funds to buy new kits, I was able to get a start on some Blood Angel projects that have been on hold for quite some time. First up... A new Chaplain kitbash, made as a stand-in for Chaplain Lemartes or any other chaplain with a jump pack:

Next up, what kind of assault player can I be without some heavy-hitting Assault Terminators to back it up? This is the first of 2 Assault Terminator squads, the other is being built to utilize the fast-striking capability of Lightning Claws. For this first squad, however, I decided to utilize the Storm Shields to make a very tough nut to crack.

So, in closing, I have a small mountain of boxes left to open and sort through. For those interested, I dropped a lot of dough while I had it, picking up things that are meant to round out my collected Space Marines. I have left to assemble:

3 Land Raiders (I may be trading a friend one regular one for a crusader variant)
29 Assault Marines (9 of which will be death company)
15 Terminators (5 Lightning claws, another 5 TH/SS, and then I'll have bits left over)
2 Rhinos

I also splurged on paint supplies, picking up a very nice workstation lamp with the built in magnifier, a few expensive brushes, and the proper cleaners to keep those brushes in good shape. I hope these amenities will help keep up my motivation, and inspire me to put out more work! Look for a mass sprint to the finish of production before the end of this blog's first year! Thanks for sticking with it.

Until next time,

Dante finally complete!

After much labor, my Commander Dante model is complete. I don't really think I will use him anytime soon, as I have reverted back to Vanilla SM lists for the most part, but I suppose he could stand in as a force commander with a Jump Pack and combi-melta.

Oh, and Happy Independence Day, fellow Americans! Thank you to all my brothers in the service that are fighting for it right now. Stay safe, Mitch!

A Sample List That I Run

I have a multitude of lists saved on my computer, but here is a general take-all-comers 1500 point list I have had mild success with.

HQ: Chaplain with Plasma pistol.

Reason for taking- He reigns in the Death Company marines quite nicely, and adds to their effectiveness on the charge. A nice way to fill that required HQ slot.

Troops: 3 squads of 10 tactical marines, 9 Bolters + Sergeant

Reason for taking- Since BA troops have to pay for their special and heavy weaponry, I don't take them in the squads regularly. Occasionally, if I am worried about armor, I will throw Meltaguns in there and cut points elsewhere. Heavy weapons in tactical squads generally do not pay off for me. These guys are easily split into combat squads to contest objectives, or left whole to be hard rocks upon which my defense is based.

Heavy Support: 1 Predator with Lascannon Sponsons and Storm Bolter
Heavy Support: Devastator squad with 4 Missile Launchers, Sarge has Plasma Pistol

Reason for taking- The predator has an autocannon to deal with unprotected infantry or very light armor, or the lascannon sponsons to tear through the thick armor. I park it on a good lane of fire and don't move it much for the rest of the game, preferably at the farthest possible range I can get away with. The devastators also do not move much. I generally deploy them into cover they can fire from and leave them there, as long as they have good visibility. The missile launchers are versatile enough to take on lightly-armored infantry hordes or crack open lightly armored tanks. The plasma pistol for the sarge is disposable if you need the points, but I like to have a potent short range weapon to help fend off assaults (and unless you are very good, they are likely to get assaulted at some point).

Elite: 10 Veteran Assault marines, 2 with combat shields and power weapons
Elite: 8 Death Company marines plus a rhino with stormbolter and extra armor

Reason for taking- You may be tempted to take squads of assault marines, but don't. The squad of vets costs only 10 points more per squad, and you get 2 attacks instead of 1, plus better weapon options. I take 2 with shields and power weapons, so that each can act as a sergeant if I want to combat-squad the unit. Usually though, I leave the unit whole so they are not as vulnerable to morale checks. Your Death Company marines are gonna soak up fire from the moment they debut on the table if your opponent has ever faced BA before. It helps to A) put them in a rhino for the protection, B)use the rhino to run cover for them, or C) let those overcharged engines rip and charge your DC-filled APC right up a flank or onto an objective. The extra armor is pretty vital to keeping that rhino running as long as possible to get your DC where you want them to be. The extra stormbolter is super cheap, so taking it is smart and increases the amount of 'softening up' you can do with your rhino before you disgorge the DC.

The Army as a Whole:
I like to think of the army in terms of "Assault Units", "Mid-range Units", and "Back-Field Units". All the units listed above can fit into one of these three categories. For example, the Chaplain and his DC (as I always stick them together, hence the DC squad size of 8) belong to the Assault Units category.

I use the Assault Units to attack the soft spots that become available. Veteran Assault Squads (VAS) can deepstrike or bound across the field with their packs, and DC marines can use the rhino to charge into soft spots.

Although the DC marines are tough as nails, and the VAS are quick, the Mid-Range Units are your bread and butter in this list. They are slower than your assaulting squads, but they are vital to taking ground and objectives. Their bolters have a pretty limited range, but full squads of them are pretty fearsome once they are within that range. A single 10-man squad equates to 18 rapid fire shots and 1 pistol shot, all at BS 4. Against lightly armored infantry, the high strength and penetration of the bolts wreck whole squads. Against vehicles its not so good, but it definitely gives you a chance to glance against AV10 or below. Your Tactical squads are your only troop units, so in objective-based games you can combat-squad them into a total of 6 scoring units, which is decent. Granted, they are small scoring units, but scoring units nevertheless.

The Back-Field units are the guys who sit still and shoot. The dev's and the Pred belong here. They are meant to dish out extreme prejudice at maximum range, to soften up the lines before the hammer hits. The pred is mobile enough to move if the need arises, but I don't like relying on vehicles for my Anti-Armor weapons due to the fact that a single penetrating hit is all that is needed to scatter Pred debris across the board. When you consider the availability of meltas in MEQ forces, in land speeders, bikes, and everyday tactical squads, it makes relying on a vehicle a more dangerous proposition. You either add another dev squad in place of a pred if you don't like vehicles either, or you can replace the dev's with another pred. Player's preference. I don't have 2 preds at the moment, so this suffices.

Well, that pretty much covers it. I don't like relying on special characters and such to win, as I feel that those tactics are not in the best spirit of the game. Dante and Corborlo have some awesome abilities, but I prefer good ol'fashioned MEQ horde tactics. I like to swarm the board with 3+ save infantry that have BS 4. That's just me though.

What would you do differently? Let's open the dialogue, and get some ideas on how to further refine my tactics.

Painting my Death Company: Speed Style

As you may know, I have been neglecting my Death Company marines for quite a while. Well, the other day I decided I had just plain had enough. So, speed painting time!

Base coat of gloss black from a non-GW paint, followed by gold trim and bone-white shoulder pads made for some of the fastest painting I have done in a while. They are not even nearly complete yet, but this is what I have so far. I suppose I need to spend less time blogging and more time painting, eh?

A Pious Chaplain

My Chappy arrived shortly after Mephiston. I wanted to really pull all the stops out on this paintjob, so I painted like I have never painted before.... and still sucked. But A+ for effort!

Death Company

So, the 2 squads came in the mail from ebay. My arm bits had already came in the post, so I was ready to put some together. My Blood Angels Death Company is coming together...

Mephiston

When my Mephiston arrived, I spent an afternoon painting him. I tried a few different techniques, and here were my results.
