For those of you who remember my first attempt at a Rhino, it wasn't very good. I was a little intimidated by the highlighting process, preferring instead to just heavily wash my models. On infantry I can get away with this a little more. On vehicles, however, it is a bit more apparent.
Thus I decided to try my hand at highlighting. The Rhino was painted mechrite red, a foundation color, and the only other red I had from GW is Scab Red. Thus, I had to turn to my lesser-quality paints from Applebarrel. I used Bright red, which I imagine is the equivalent to Blood Red, but with a less smooth mixture. This made it a little more difficult to use proper highlighting technique, and it appeared to be more of a drybrush job. Ah well, the desired effect was nearly achieved, so I had to call it good.
This job helped make it more true red, more like a Blood Angel vehicle should be. I hope you agree!
I also added some water transfer decals to help Angelicize the vehicle. A coat of Modge-Podge Matte finish sealed it.
I think it turned out quite well. One thing you may want to try in the future is watering down your paints a little. Doing this will give you a smother coat of paint on the model, but may require two to three coats. It's worth the extra effort.
ReplyDeleteYup, I did that, this was a 4 coat job. Took me 3 days, but the quality of paint made it really come out lousy. I guess that is +1 for using official GW paints!
ReplyDeleteThat's not a bad paintjob, I like the nice deep red you've got there. I start form a basecoat of Mecherite Red myself on my own Blood Angels, and I've found it to make painting Blood Angels a lot easier, and it gives a much grittier result, which is just right for 40K.
ReplyDeleteThe only pointers I can give are to use higher quality paints, and try and make the secondary colours solid. I'd give the yellow/bone colour on the doors a second coat, and use a fine brush to neaten up the black on the top hatch. You can only see these problems close up though, so it's not really needed. The decals really set the whole tank off nicely.
